6-9 Months Baby Must Haves

September 28, 2015

6-9-Months_Baby_Must_Haves copy

Well we have a 9 month old in our home. She is successfully crawling which means nothing is safe. I remember I once said, “I can’t wait until she crawls,” and another fellow Mommy looked at me with a furrowed brow and said, “No, you don’t.”

“Cranky, much?” I thought.

What I did not realize was just how much chasing I would be doing.

The first 6 weeks of motherhood, let’s be real

September 19, 2015

BackwardsNHighHeels_Motherhood
I love that this Blog has become a breeding ground for Mommy (and Daddy) peers and I to question our sanity and offer words of encouragement.

Months prior, a Mommy Friend secretly reached out to me and asked if she could share a “little secret” and then proceeded to gift me with the knowledge of her pregnancy, which at the time was “shhh!” She had yet to make an announcement but felt comfortable enough sharing with me because she found comfort in my Blog. I think it was this One. It was one of the first moments since I started the Blog that I felt good about what I was doing because my ultimate goal has been to generate discussion, become a source of relation and develop connections.

Since then, her little secret became a big announcement, and now her announcement a sweet little baby girl! Congrats, again!

Dear Lauren

September 11, 2015

Dear Lauren
Dear Lauren,

I never knew you, and you never knew me. But somehow over the course of the last few years of the nearly 3,000 people whose lives were so tragically taken from this earth on 9/11, your name keeps presenting itself to me.

The first time I learned of your story, I was volunteering at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanskville, PA.

September 11, 2001:
I remember. It was picture day at my high school. I was in the school’s auditorium waiting for our classmates to finish up so we could be dismissed. The initial whispers of what had occurred began here.  A few minutes later the hallway bell rang loud and we were scattered, heading into different directions to our next class. The memory that forever exists in my mind like an image that has been burned into a TV screen, was in those moments. I was walking past a fellow classroom and as I looked in I noticed the usually rowdy bunch of upperclassmen were still, all faces glued to a TV.  And, in my memory, I swear it was slow motion, I looked ahead and my Spanish Teacher, whose class I was heading to, came running from the classroom across the hall and into a fellow teacher’s room exclaiming, “Turn on the TV.”

I saw the World Trade Centers on fire.

This Is My Village

September 6, 2015

BackwardsNHighHeels_Blog_Motherhood
I tend to be a horrible photographer. Actually, I should just not use the words “I” or “photographer” in the same sentence unless I am saying, “I am hiring a photographer.” But, as I was flipping through my phone’s images, I came across the one above which I took last week.

You see on the left is my grandmother, Meema, my sweet baby girl and my Mom. As I was behind the lens, four generations of women are interconnected in this shot. I am in love. My heart is full. It is a picture that I know I will forever cherish.VIEW STORY »

Wednesday Wisdom

August 19, 2015

Wednesday Wisdom back at ya! I started thinking about this reoccurring post theme and I realized to some of you I may seem like I am trying to tote myself as some mindful human being who walks around giving advice like a martyr. I am not. Honestly, the origin of my Wednesday Wisdom post series came out of pure therapy for me. You see I am a words kind of gal. My love language is Words of Affirmation. So, it is only fitting that when I need a boast in energy, confidence or confirmation that all will be okay, I turn to words.

When I get down on myself, stressed and frustrated I always find myself on Pinterest, thumbs ferociously searching for a quote, a sign, a line or two that make me sigh in relief and even on occasion, cry in hope or exhaustion. My only intent with Wednesday Wisdom is to share with you what I have found inspiring throughout the week.

I don’t know why I am explaining myself. This is my here blog, I do what I want. But, you will also find as you read along with me and my life journeys I tend to put weight on what others think. It truly is a terrible trait.

No Bake Cookies

August 16, 2015

I am not a baker. I wish I was.

I am pretty sure I scrambled eggs in a cake once as I added the hot butter. And, I work too fast, which means I sometimes mix up the directions. “Oh, 1 cup of flour not 2!” In my defense, the ingredient below was 2 tsp of Baking Soda. Minor mix-ups, I tell ya.

One thing I can promise is that my No Bake Cookie recipe is easy and delicious. Plus, if this hot mess of a baker can achieve cookie success, you are golden.

You Will Always Be My Baby

You little lady, you rocked my world 13 years ago.

National Sibling Day - BackwardsNHighHeels.com
Finding out Mom was pregnant, well let me tell you… that was just so embarrassing. I remember the day she told me like it was yesterday. “I am pregnant,” she declared, with a smile on her face. Although, there was a definite nervousness too, as if she knew telling me could go one of two ways. Terribly good or terribly bad. I am so sorry to say, it went the latter.

Easy Peasy Caprese

July 30, 2015

The weekend is approaching folks! You know what that means… get yo’ food on. Well it does for me anyway. Ahh, I missed my calling… a restaurant critic would have suited me just fine.

If you are like me and the rest of the East Coast, you know it is hot as all get-up. I am opting for a popsicle or two for dinner. Bring on the banana flavored! And, the naturally cold-blooded body of mine is all like, “why are you not shivering and what is this thing you call sweat?”

Therefore, while Baby Lo and I stick to each other the last thing I want to do in the evening is turn on the oven or stand behind a stove. I mean, please! So, I convinced Nathan that one of our favorite appetizers would totally be an acceptable side dish to our BLT’s. Because again, I am not making myself more miserable in this heat and he knows I would be completely okay with a Popsicle for dinner, so he goes along.

Shrimp Salad Sandwich

July 20, 2015

Loyal readers, you know me by now. I am a simple girl just trying to get by.

New readers, oh, hello! Thanks for joining my party. I am a new mommy, wife and full-time business professional. Basically, I am just like your wife, your sister, your friend, heck, I am like a lot of woman out there who seem to stack on more and more responsibilities as the years go by, forgetting that our days are not getting longer. Well, in essence they are but we still are dealing with 24 hours, people. Quit adding to your plate!

I am part of a club, a club of really tired Momma’s! The RTM Club. There, I stake claim to the name. So, what I deal with is real life issues such as stress and demand and hungry bellies. See, I can deal with the stress and demand and actually try my very best to remedy a solution but damn you, hungry bellies, you never go away.

So, back to the RTM Club, we like to find ways to eliminate processes without sacrificing quality. Am I right, RTM’s?

This here is a recipe that does just that. I whipped this up while unloading groceries, feeding a baby some sweet potatoes and packing a bag for a little evening pool dip. See? You will love me and this recipe!

Shrimp-Salad-Sandwich_BackwardsNHighHeels 2
Shrimp Salad Sandwich:

Serves 2

  • 1 Lb of Shrimp (I get mine steamed and seasoned at the market to save time!)
  • 2 Stalks of Celery – Finely Diced
  • 1/4 Cup of Mayo
  • Lemon Juice to taste
  • Old Bay to taste
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 1 Cup of Lettuce
  • 2 Croissants

As mentioned above, if you can get your market to steam and season your shrimp for you, do it, as it will save you so much time in the kitchen! Peel and chop the shrimp and set aside. Dice two celery stalks and add to bowl. Add 1/4 of a cup of Mayo and then continue to add more Mayo by the spoon if this does not fit your desired consistency and flavor. HERE is where you store the mixture in the refrigerator so you can feed and change your baby and head to the pool. Not down with that? Skip ahead. Add the juice of about a half a lemon and stir. Season the mixture with Old Bay, salt and pepper. To assemble sandwich add a layer of mayo to one side of a croissant, add a spoonful of mixture, a handful of lettuce and the croissant half.

Serve alongside an ear of corn and savor the flavors of sweet summertime!

Seriously, this dish is so easy, I even had time to make a simple strawberry shortcake for dessert. Four ingredients: Strawberries, Honey (for sweetening and to pull the juices), Sara Lee Pound Cake and Cool Whip.

I am not a Saint, nor mother or wife of the year, but I swear my husband wanted to know what alien possessed his wife’s body to make such a dinner from start to finish. Raise your forks, RTM’s, this one is for you. Enjoy!

Cheers to the weekend! You know what I am looking forward to? I am looking forward to napping. I know, I am lame. If you saw my post earlier this week, you know we are transitioning Baby Lo to her crib. Therefore, Momma Bear is just not sleeping. Partly because of worry and partly because Baby Lo needs soothed back to sleep a bit. Is it bad of me to say that I am so looking forward to her morning nap which may produce an extra hour of shut eye for me? I can tell you think I am so very daring and interesting these days.

Here are this week’s top Links. Likes. Loves.

  1. Do you suffer from F.S.O. – Freezing Summer Office? I know I do. In fact, the first thing I do is crank that baby of an office heater on when I enter for the day.
  2. Nordstrom Anniversary Sale – Oh, shiz nitch! If you have NOT heard about this sale you must live under a pile of clothes. Oh, I crack myself up! Every fashion Blogger and their mother, father, and second cousin are sharing their fabulous fashion finds. Go get you some.
  3. Stop Making These 15 Body Language Mistakes – I am the Queen of the arm cross. Must. Break. Habit!
  4. Weird Advice Pregnant Couples Get – BEST video I have seen in a long while. Been there and am still laughing. Heads over your head! My Mom once yelled at me for this when we were shopping and I reached up to pull a shirt down.
  5. Sweet Baby Girl Sees Clearly For The First Time – Videos like this make me smile and feel so happy. It is incredible the good that does exist in this world and how small victories have huge impacts. It also makes me so incredibly grateful and thankful to God for all his blessings.
  6. 100 Years of Fashion in Under 2 Minutes – I was born for 1965… no wait, I am cool with 2015.
  7. Should Women Really Be Rushing Back To Work After Giving Birth? This is a hot topic for me. I never truly appreciated Maternity Leave, nor have I been so disappointed in the system until I had to experience the benefits and the downfalls. We live in an amazing country, yet we are so behind in appreciating and valuing childbirth and the physical and emotional needs of baby and mother during the first year.
  8. Six Person Sandless Beach Towel – Where the hell were you when I need you a few weeks ago? Reference to this.
  9. When a Bride and Groom Share a Kiss and Lift Their Hands – I am not sure if this is real. Part of me thinks it is all a gimick. Regardless I do LOVE that Grandma just says, heck to it all and exits the church at around 1:32.
  10. Back To School! If I was a teenager, I would be begging for these. Yes, I am a dork!
