If You Commute, Then These Podcasts Are For You

April 26, 2017

The Best Podcasts For Commuters_BackwardsNHighHeels Blog

It is no secret. I commute. I think I have shared and whined about it a few times on here. Nearly an hour each way, two hours per day, at least 10 hours per week. It is equivalent to traveling to my favorite beach in South Caroline, once a week. Eek! Let’s not even talk about the miles or wear that I put on my car each year. But hey that is what cars are for right? To drive.

When people find out I commute the number one response I hear is, “I bet you love the time to decompress and be alone?” Eh! Actually, I am quite the opposite. I am a pit of anxiety. So, on the way to work, I worry and stress about everything I must accomplish in the day, the meeting I am dreading or the obstacle I must face. On the way home, I create a custom list in my mind of my next phase of to-dos for the day. So, basically, the commute just adds to my worry and stress.
I really needed to find an escape and music was just not doing the trick. I can only listen to the Chainsmokers “Closer” and The Weekends “Starboy” so many times before I feel like I may rather just stare at the open road in silence. But, then I was saved by the Podcast, or Podcasts if you will.

I like to listen to an eclectic mix. I bounce from motherhood-themed to business focused. I enjoy the options that fit my mood. So, if you find yourself like me, staring at the open road for a length of time, I very much suggest tuning into one of my favorites.

NPR: HOW I BUILT THIS
This Podcast is the reason I love Podcasts! It is what finally hooked me and actually made me excited for my extended stay in the car. Focusing on entrepreneurs and innovators from some of the world’s biggest and best-known brands, the show focuses on their failures and triumphs and really gives light to resilience.

Favorite Episodes:  Spanx, Sara Blakely, and Airbnb: Joe Gebbia.

COFFEE + CRUMBS

First, I fell in love with Ashlee Gadd’s Instagram, then I fell in love with Ashlee’s Coffee + Crumbs Blog and then their Podcast. Nice branding! Coffee + Crumbs celebrates motherhood in the kindest, softest and most touching way. When I think of this Podcast, I think of a best friend, leggings and an oversize sweatshirt, hot cocoa or glass of wine, couch time, girl time. It just feels like home.

Favorite Episodes: Marriage Is Good Hard Work and Before I Was a Mom

THE LONGEST SHORTEST TIME

This is one of my favorite parenting focused Podcasts. Hosted by This American Life contributor and author Hillary Frank, The Longest Shortest Time celebrates many tales and takes on parenting. It has an editorial feel to the storytelling and content, instead of a conversation with the same person. I love the feel!

Favorite Episodes: The New You, It’ll Do and The New You, It’ll Do Update

THE GARYVEE AUDIO EXPERIENCE
Hosted by entrepreneur, CEO, investor, vlogger, and public speaker Gary Vaynerchuk, I knew I would like, no, LOVE this Podcast before I even gave it a chance. Why? Because I have been a Gary Vaynerchuk fan since his Wine Library days. He is the master of all things social, marketing and sales. He gets it and his style is candid and real, so I get that. If you own a business, want to own a business, are in marketing, sales, are a manager, just calling all humans – listen to Gary!

Favorite Episodes: A Keynote: Dublin Tech Summit and Archangel Summit

TED RADIO HOUR
Maybe I really just love Guy Raz since Guy also hosts NPR’s How I Built This Podcast. Who doesn’t love a good TED Talk? I am quoting this directly from the Podcast’s description, because I cannot explain it any better, “Based on Talks given by riveting speakers on the world-renowned TED stage, each show is centered on a common theme – such as the source of happiness, crowd-sourcing innovation, power shifts, or inexplicable connections.” I get lost in these.

Favorite Episodes:  The Act of Listening and Growing Up

Do you have a favorite Podcast you would like to recommend to me? I would love to hear! Share in the comments below of follow up on one of my social channels.
